Air transport: under a cloudy sky

The airline industry is in trouble.

According to the chairman of International Air Transport Association (IATA), it is in a severe crisis. The industry is overregulated in Europe while it is overprotected in the United States. Additional security measures after 11 September, 2001 and increasing oil prices have complicated administrative process as well as ensuring high costs.

Cost reducing initiatives like e-ticketing have not been implemented fully. Airports and airline carriers are working on standardization to make life easier for passengers. This means that business processes, and thus, Information Systems (IS) have to be aligned. An increasing number of interfaces in the value-chain require tighter co-operation between all parties, including IT organizations involved.
