MarsLander is a realistic simulation in which a team of 10-12 participants operate the company SPACE-Y. An organization that launches rockets into space, collects a lot of data, and sells it to universities, colleges, research centers. They can view and edit the data on tablets and computers. In this simulation, a new mission is planned that will bring a rocket to Mars. However, the time pressure means that the rocket has to be launched, while some of the services are not yet operational and a large backlog of issues is still open. The challenge for the team is to get rid of this backlog as quickly as possible, to build and implement new services, and at the same time to seriously process the user feedback. And all this in time so that we can make this mission a success.
ITIL®4 provides new insights into how an IT Operations organization can work more flexibly, faster and with higher quality. This allows IT Operations teams to collaborate better with development departments that are often already carrying out DevOps projects. ITIL®4 brings new insights. This game emphasizes the importance of People and Process. These aspects are crucial for a successful implementation of ITIL®4 and make this simulation of great value.
In an interactive day, the teams experience the practical sides of ITIL®4. In this way, they learn how to better apply ITIL in their daily work situation. In the simulation, the core concepts of ITIL®4 are discussed; the Guiding Principles, Service Value System, Service Value Chain Activities and some Practices. The participants will work on:
Working on a shared vision and goals within the entire (end-to-end) team. This by continuously communicating with the business roles and jointly guiding the strategy.
The team of participants works in SPACE-Y and after the introduction of the game leader, they are asked to make a first design of the processes within the team. In addition, the team has insight into the outstanding issues and customer feedback and they have an idea of the new services that need to be set up. After this preparatory work, the missile will be launched. In 3 game rounds, the rocket flies to Mars and finally lands there. Along the way, customers always come up with changing questions and assignments, malfunctions to the missile are reported by Flight Operations and customer support receives ‘complaints’ from customers. After each round, the game master discusses the results on the basis of a dashboard, and the team is given the opportunity to improve.
This simulation does not require any specific knowledge of ITIL®4. Much of the required knowledge is provided by the game master during this session. This makes this simulation very suitable for operational employees within an IT department who generally need to be familiar with the ITIL®4 theory. In addition, this simulation is suitable for team leaders and process managers to develop an overall picture of the ITIL®4 principles and concepts in order to be better able to apply the theory in their own practice. Finally, this 1-day interactive session is also an effective way to give management an overall picture of the added value of ITIL®4
