About Vitens

Water supply company Vitens was established in 2002 after the merger of 3 water companies. The company employs 1,400 people. Vitens supplies 5.5 million customers with drinking water via a distribution network of 50,000 kilometers of pipes, 250 pumping stations and 96 production sites. This network delivers a total of almost 330 million m3 of water. At its laboratory, Vitens conducts microbiological and chemical research into water/groundwater quality. Each day, the lab processes hundreds of water samples in a largely automated process.

Key Challenge

As well as being a production business that pumps water to the surface, filters it and tests it in its own laboratory, Vitens is also a distributor, transporting water via its own network to consumers and charging them by means of water meters. The business processes needed all use large quantities of data which grow by the day. This, combined with far-reaching automation and the use of sensor technology, has made data an essential part of the business operation. Water production and distribution nowadays is largely automated, and is managed based on sensor data.  The more processes that are controlled by data, the higher the quality of that data needs to be. An urgent need has therefore emerged at Vitens to gain full control of the data.

The Approach

Together with Quint, Vitens embarked on a process to give shape to data governance and data management strategy. Quint used the DMBOK data maturity model which has been developed by the DAMA community. According to DMBOK, the maturity of the organization was assessed, and the outcome was used to shape the strategy, policies and method used to organize management and governance.

The results

Vitens looks back positively on the cooperation with Quint: “Their expertise and practical experience with data governance and DMBOK provides a solid foundation for an efficient and effective approach to data management and data governance at Vitens.” As a result of understanding the data maturity, next to having a data strategy, Vitens has assigned Data Stewards to take accountability on the management of data.
