Announcement: Discontinuation of ITIL v3

Following the successful launch of new and updated ITIL® 4, Axelos has decided to discontinue the previous version of ITIL Service Management certification – ITIL v3, by the end of 2021.

There will be a phased approach to discontinuing ITIL v3, allowing customers sufficient time to transition from ITIL v3 to the latest version of the ITIL framework, ITIL 4. Customers will have enough time to accumulate 17 credits through ITIL v3 Intermediate level certifications, to qualify for the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition examination.

Customers will not be able to purchase ITIL v3 Foundation training and examinations from the 1st July 2021, followed by the ITIL v3 Intermediates from 1st January 2022.

Although customers will no longer be able to purchase training or examinations for ITIL v3 after 1st January 2022, they will still have another six months to book the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition examination. The ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition module allows practitioners to transition to the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation when they have accumulated enough certification credits to qualify for the transition examination.

The confirmed dates for discontinuing ITIL v3 are as follows:

  • ITIL v3 Foundation (English) to be discontinued as of 1st July 2021
  • ITIL v3 Intermediates (English) to be discontinued as of 1st January 2022
  • ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition examination (English) to be discontinued as of 1st July 2022
  • Translated guidance and examination discontinuation dates will be announced on a case-by-case basis based on the corresponding product release dates for the ITIL 4 higher modules.

Since the launch of ITIL 4 in February 2019, AXELOS and PeopleCert have seen a huge demand for the new product, and the feedback has been extremely positive. ITIL 4 incorporates the proven guidance from ITIL v3 with additional guidance to promote two-way value chains and explicit guidance on how ITIL works with new and emerging agile concepts, and it is already at the core of every business strategy in the fourth industrial age of digital transformation. The latest version of ITIL reflects the fast-paced and complex business environment offering comprehensive guidance for the management of information technology in the modern service economy.
